Learning outcomes

By completing this module, we hope that you will:

• become familiar with the terminology used in advance decision-making

• gain a broad knowledge of the legal position of ADRTs in England and Wales

• be able to demonstrate an understanding of mental capacity and how it relates to ADRTs

• become aware of the practicalities related to making and interpreting an ADRT

• become familiar with the strengths and limitations of advance statements and ADRTs, both practical and theoretical

• know the relevant questions to ask about an ADRT if presented with one

• gain an understanding of how and when to question the validity of an ADRT according to the legal definitions of validity.
