Professor Philip CowenMRC Clinical Scientist and Honorary Consultant Psychiatrist, Department of Psychiatry, Oxford.

Elected to a personal chair in psychopharmacology at Oxford University in 1997.

Professor Cowen's main interests are in the biochemistry and treatment of mood disorders, particularly the pharmacological management of resistant depression. His group has special expertise in the use of pharmacological challenge tests to assess the effects of both mood disorder and antidepressant treatments on brain serotonin function. More recently, in collaboration with Professor Paul Grasby at the MRC Cyclotron Unit, the group has been able to use ligand PET imaging to assess the role of brain 5-HT1A receptors in vulnerability to mood disorder and the mechanism of antidepressant action.
