by Professor John M. Eagles and Dr Allen J. Shand

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): Part 1The idea that our well-being fluctuates with the seasons has been around for literally thousands of years, but it was only in the late 1980s that Norman Rosenthal and colleagues gave a name to seasonal affective disorder or SAD.

In this module, we will look at:

  • the history and evolution of SAD

  • the epidemiology and aetiology of SAD

  • symptoms of SAD and diagnosis.

Please note that this module does not cover the management of SAD. However, it is designed to be read in conjunction with the second module: Seasonal affective disorder (SAD): Part 2 management which covers the management of SAD in detail.
